Why is Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility/Anti-Racism important to you?
I grew up in a military family. As such, I moved 11 different times before I turned 18. I've lived on both coasts, in Bermuda, and in Italy, with lots of travel in between and beyond. This upbringing instilled in me both a sense of curiosity as well as an appreciation for the richness found in welcoming diverse people and perspectives into my life--cultural diversity, racial diversity, gender diversity, geographic diversity, everything.
We all bring something different to the table (and we all should have a seat at that table).
My storied childhood inspired an unquenchable zeal for travel, as well as a deep-seated desire to hear about different human experiences and inculcate them into my world view. I've been privileged to continue to travel physically--and when I can't, I've always loved to do so mentally, through books. Non-fiction is all well and good, but I am a huge advocate for the empathy and education you can get through fiction and poetry.
While I've endeavored to diversify my bookshelf over the years, I've also worked hard to understand the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility specifically in communication. With that, I am so grateful to be able to translate my personal passions into my profession. I'm committed to celebrating departmental and individual accomplishments in my DFM role, while also ensuring that the content I create is accessible to everyone--whether that's through word choice or web coding.
DEIA ('A' being accessibility AND antiracism, I suppose, in this case) are important to me as a professional, a citizen of the world, and as a person who believes deeply in the importance of elevating voices and identities to make our collective experience better and more whole.
What is an informative, quirky, or fun fact about yourself?
To my eternal shame and chagrin (because it's in all of my favorite foods), I am one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap.
