Farley and Kempe Center Researchers Publish Child Safety Online Policy Brief
Apr 11, 2025
We are pleased to announce the release of the first Farley-Kempe policy brief about child safety online, focusing on the critical issue of age verification. Recognizing that all children possess the fundamental right to protection and safe, nurturing environments for growth and development, this brief addresses a significant gap in our modern world. Despite today’s children being digital natives, born into a world in which technology is embedded into their lives, we have yet to establish a robust legal framework to guarantee their safety within the digital realm. This policy brief marks a crucial step towards bridging this gap and advocating for the protections our children deserve online.
Farley Center learner Maura Gissen, M.A., was corresponding author on this brief, which points to online age verification as a critical tool toward a safer, healthier online environment for young people. Jessica Kenny, PhD and Shale Wong, MD, MSPH, were coauthors along with Kempe Center Advocacy Director Warren Binford, J.D., EdM.
