Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) Research Center of Excellence

The University of �鶹��ý�� Anschutz Medical Campus has been designated by the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) as a . The Research Center of Excellence is part of the Movement Disorders Center and Memory Disorders Clinic in the UCHealth system. The Behavioral Neurology and Movement Disorders sections have dedicated clinical staff and coordinators who work together to provide exemplary care and to help bridge services offered to patients, family members, caregivers, and the community. In addition, the University of �鶹��ý�� is home to one of the nation’s few Neuropalliative Care clinics, which focuses on improving quality of life and providing supportive care for people living with neurological illnesses and their loved ones.

Learn about Lewy Body Dementia

Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is a type of neurodegenerative disease accounting for 10-25% of all dementia cases. LBD includes Parkinson's Disease Dementia (PDD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). Parkinson's Disease Dementia is dementia in the setting of well-established and diagnosed Parkinson's disease. 80% of people living with Parkinson's will get dementia, usually later in the course of the disease. In Dementia with Lewy Bodies the first and most prominent symptoms are cognitive.

LBD is diagnosed by reviewing a person's medical history, doing a physical and neurological exam, and sometimes ordering blood tests or brain scans to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms they are experiencing. There is not a specific test confirm LBD with complete certainty while someone is alive, so if a doctor sees signs that strongly point to LBD they will give a diagnosis of "probable LBD".
