Dr. Hopfer is a child/adolescent and addiction psychiatrist and professor of psychiatry who works at SRMH Monday afternoons. He is available for psychiatric evaluations and medication management. He enjoys working with patients to address their psychiatric concerns and has sub-specialty expertise in the area of addiction as well as ADHD.  When not at SRMH he spends half a day at faculty/staff mental health, half a day at synergy (an outpatient program for teens with addiction problems) and the rest of his time conducting research as well as working with early-stage faculty in the department developing research careers.

I have been providing psychotherapy for 40 years, 27 years of which as a licensed psychologist. I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå at Boulder. My general psychotherapy approach is to customize treatment based on each individual patient, by engaging in a collaborative conversation to clarify the focus of treatment and expectations regarding the therapeutic process. Accordingly, the process may range from providing consultation and advice regarding identified problems; providing counseling to engage in collaborative problem-solving; providing psychotherapy to promote personal change and growth; or some combination thereof.

I’ve been in practice for over 10 years. I got my undergraduate degree at UC Davis and my graduate degree at DU.  I’ve been with the Faculty and Staff clinic for about 2 years, before that I was in various community clinics in the metro area. My style in general is direct but gentle- I want our sessions to be helpful for you. I lean toward evidence-based,  behavioral treatments (CBT, DBT or ACT); looking at tangible skills and tools to try to manage distress in daily life. I balance this in session with providing space for validation and looking for opportunities for mindfulness. In my personal life I like skiing, and cooking.

Rachel graduated from Emory University and Regis University with her master’s degree as an Adult, Gerontologic, and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She is an addiction psychiatry nurse practitioner working at FSMH to provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management. She has special skills in palliative care, enjoying helping individuals define their unique quality of life and reach their goals. Her other position with CU is working at the Center for Addiction, Dependency, and Rehabilitation (CeDAR) in the outpatient clinic and inpatient detox/residential care settings. When not at work, Rachel enjoys spending time outside with her family.
